The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord in the British Isles and its Districts and Consistories Overseas

Provincial Grand Senatus of

 West Yorkshire

Please find below the address delivered by the Provincial Grand Summus at the Provincial Grand Senatus Meeting in September 2018.

Companions, I’m sure that once again this is the moment you have been waiting for – so could I start by thanking you all for your support today.

Our Distinguished Guests from other Provinces and Orders have already been introduced to you individually and on your behalf Companions, I again extend a very warm, West Yorkshire welcome, to each and every one.

Whilst being one of our West Yorkshire Past Presidents, I am also very pleased to welcome Distinguished Companion James Henry Newman OBE, in his capacity as Deputy President and Chairman of the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

Thank you James, for all of your work and effort on our behalf in the Craft charity, let’s not forget Companions that the Craft is where we have all come from and it is particularly important to continue supporting our Craft Lodges and its Charity.

Our close association with the Order of the Secret Monitor continues to flourish and it is essential to the success of our Order. I must take this opportunity to thank the OSM Rulers, V Dist Companion David Staniforth and Dist Companion Alan Webster, and the Brethren of course, for the generous support over the past year which has made a significant contribution to the success our Province has enjoyed.

Our meeting today has seen the retirement from office of Very Distinguished Companion John Michael Beard as Assistant Provincial Grand Summus and Very Distinguished Companion Gavin Paul Kaye as Provincial Grand Episcopus.

V Dist Comp John has taken over as Provincial Grand Episcopus and V Dist Comp Gavin has accepted the rank of Past Provincial Grand Chancellor, I am both very relieved and delighted, to see these two senior members, who have done so much over the past years, remain active and contributing to the running of the Province.

This has been a very busy and successful year with ceremonies being performed at all meetings with a total of 11 Candidates being brought into the Order to-date.

The Province held a joint Consistory Preparation Meeting in June at the South Yorkshire Consistory meeting, when 6 Companions were given their Preparation in readiness for future Presidency. Companions - a further Preparation meeting will be held at the Calder Vale Consistory meeting on the 5th October next.

Due to increased activity this year White Rose Consistory has increased its meetings from 2 to 3 per year.

In order to introduce some degree of flexibility and hopefully attract further Candidates the Calder Vale Consistory has decided during 2019 to become a ‘Daylight Consistory’ with a possible change in meeting dates.

Back in May this year, at the meeting of Grand Senatus at Mark Masons Hall, Dist Comp James Newman was appointed by the Grand Summus to the rank of Grand Steward and earlier received his 4th Grade in the Order.

At an earlier meeting our Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, Dist Comp Gerald Barker received his 5th Grade in the Order.

Congratulations to both, the result of much commitment to the Order.

To assist progress promotional literature and information is now in place and systems for distribution have been agreed with the Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler of West Yorkshire OSM. Copies of which are available today.

My view is that our 2019 prime objectives must be;

(1) maintain our close association and relationship with the OSM.

(2) to continue to develop and strengthen the position of our three Consistories by recruitment

(3) look to improving our present level, delivery and understanding of the Ritual (4) to promote visiting and support within each Consistory.

I am personally very encouraged by the membership support and that of the OSM Provincial Rulers and Brethren; we are enjoying a new enthusiasm for the Order, which now appears to be spreading across the Province. If I have one, my only concern being, the long period of inactivity between November and May which occurs each year and this needs to be looked at very soon.

Companions, let me conclude by congratulating all of the Officers who have been appointed today. I do hope you all enjoy your year in Office, as much as I shall enjoy working with you.

My especial thanks go to our retiring Provincial Grand Recorder, Dist Comp Alan Webster who has worked so hard in preparing for this meeting and throughout the year.

Also to our Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies Dist Comp Gerry Barker, his Deputy, and Assistant for their efficient organisation, in keeping our meeting orderly.

And finally to all of you Companions, for the support you give to your Consistories, to our Order and to this Province, I am sure you will enjoy your year ahead

Companions - May the God of our Fathers have you in his Holy keeping                   – and Companions -  watch out for those Philistines they are everywhere.
